Annual competition honors Lockwood resident, Henry Martinus, and celebrates working ranch skills.
King City, CA – The Annual Monterey County Ranch Rodeo kicks off the rodeo season at the Rava Arena this Sunday, January 14, 9:00 a.m. at the fairgrounds in King City.
Cowboys and cowgirls from the central coast will compete in events that demonstrate the skills needed for everyday working ranch hands. Events include: Open Cut & Rope, Open Ranch Doctoring, Single Steer Stopping and Sorting. Up for grabs are buckles for first place in each category and the coveted All Around Saddle which this year is named in the memory of Lockwood resident, Henry Martinus as well as a custom designed boot bag for the top female competitor.
The Ranch Rodeo is not just for adults. Fun contests open to ranch kids and city kids will take place at noon. Every participant earns a treat with the winners receiving a commemorative buckle. This year’s contests are Dummy Roping, Stick Horse Races and Boot Races for kids up to 10 years of age. Kids can sign-up the day of event for a small fee and a chance to win the shiny first place buckle. Prizes for kids are sponsored by Benson Plumbing, California Orchard Co, Salinas Land Company, Danny & Nicci DeRoza, Tom Bengard Ranch, Pedrazzi Cattle Company, Will Clark Trucking and Bill & Karen Whitney.
The awards and events recognize the skill of both the horse and rider as they compete in the kind of ranch activities that are done every day on working cattle operations. 2018 Ranch Rodeo award sponsors are Jet Company, Borjon Auto Center, the Martinus Family, LA Hearne Company, American Door & Gates, Nino Homes, Pacific Valley Bank, Sturdy Oil, Steinbeck Equine Clinic, Coast Pipe, Frank’s Gardening Services, Toro Petroleum, Rabobank, Visalia Livestock Market, Christensen & Giannini, James & Lora Eade, Denise Grigory, Margaret Duflock, Mike and Mary Orradre and Neil Bassetti Farms.
“This event is possible because of our partnership with the Monterey County Cattlemen’s Association and the tremendous support from businesses and individuals”, said TJ Plew, Salinas Valley Fair, CEO. The event is a fundraiser for both the Salinas Valley Fair and Monterey County Cattlemens Association. Event proceeds will provide local scholarships and be reinvested into arena equipment to maintain the Rava Arena and Topo Event Center. The Ranch Rodeo is an annual tradition that celebrates our western heritage and recognizes the skills necessary when working a cattle ranch. No admission fees are charged for spectators of the Ranch Rodeo and the public is encouraged to attend.
